Alliant Tech Gets Howitzer Pact

Alliant Techsystems ( ATK) received a technology demonstration contract from the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center to develop a precision guidance kit for the army's 155-millimeter howitzer.

The kit will reportedly make the reserves of existing artillery ammunition more effective at a lower cost by adding GPS guidance and navigation capability.

"ATK is the industry leader in the design and development of gun-launched precision projectiles that must perform in high g-force environments," the Edina, Minn.-based company said. "Our PGK solution, featuring a highly effective fixed canard guidance approach, gun-hardened electronics, self-generated power, and a minimum number of moving parts, not only meets but exceeds requirements for accuracy, effectiveness, range and cost."
