Bombay stocks surged for the fourth straight session Thursday, breaking 12,000 for the first time and setting an all-time high.

The BSE Sensex jumped 144 points to settle at 12,040.

Petrochemicals major Reliance climbed 8%, Tata Steel rose 5.8% and Hindalco, the top aluminum company, gained 3.4%. Other gainers included Tata Motors ( TTM), IT name Satyam and chemical outfit Grasim.

Losers on the index were power company NTPC, down 2.5%, HDFC, off 2%, and Hero Honda, down 1.7%.

Hexaware Technologies slid 3% despite doubling net profits.

Syngenta India, an agribusiness company, was down 6.5% on posting a loss in the most recent quarter.
