Bombay stocks closed higher Monday on a strong day for the information technology sector.

The BSE Sensex rose 77 to close at 10,937. The index earlier hit an intraday high of 10,947.

Major gainers included Wipro, which rose 4.5%, Infosys ( INFY) and TCS, which each gained 3%, and Grasim, which surged 2.5%.

Hindalco, the alumimum major, gained 2% and Cipla gained 1.6%.

IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects surged 6% on news it is building a steel fabrication and galvanization unit for manufacture of transmission-line-tower-parts at Butibori Industrial Area, Nagpur, Mahararshtra.

Major losers on the BSE Sensex were Bajaj Auto, down 0.8%, and Bharti Tele-ventures and HLL, each down 0.7%. Ranbaxy, the pharma major, dipped 0.5%, as did Tata Power. Reliance Energy shed 0.3%.
