MCI ( MCIP) added former Covad ( DVW) exec Robert Davenport to its board Monday, fulfilling a company rule that a new director must join each year.

The Ashburn, Va., telco said Davenport becomes the 10th member of its board. He will serve until Verizon ( VZ) closes its acquisition of MCI. That deal is on track to close by year-end, the companies have said.

Davenport is currently a telecom investor through his RD Partners vehicle. Previously he was international chief at Covad and a top manager at Tele-Communications Inc.

On Monday, MCI slipped a penny to $19.81.
