The Houston-based oil major said Friday it was continuing a 53-year tradition by transforming a pumpkin-shaped 3 million-gallon storage tank at its Wilmington, Calif., refinery into the world's largest jack-o-lantern.

The refinery pumpkin patch expects at least 30,000 visitors who want a close-up look at Smilin' Jack, ConocoPhillips said. It said visiting the great pumpkin has "remained a popular Halloween event in Los Angeles' South Bay area" since 1952.

The company said preparing Smilin' Jack for his annual appearance requires more than 100 gallons of orange, black and white paint. Conoco said carving open the giant jack-o-lantern, on a pro forma basis assuming it were an actual pumpkin, could supply the filling for 26.8 million pumpkin pies.

On Friday, Conoco rose 35 cents to $61.40.
