Federal Signal ( FSS) named Alan L. Shaffer president of its tool group.

The Oak Brook, Ill., manufacturer said the tool group, headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, had revenue of $161 million in 2004.

Shaffer, 55, joins Federal Signal from American Axle ( AXL), a $3.6 billion manufacturer of automotive driveline and chassis modules and components and metal formed products.

On Tuesday, Federal Signal fell 7 cents to $17.03, and American Axle slipped 4 cents to $23.04.
