BMC Software ( BMC) said fourth-quarter earnings slid by 58% and revenue slumped by 1%. The results were within the range of guidance issued by the company last month, so the market's reaction to announcement was muted. In recent after-hours trading, shares had slipped by 12 cents to $17.25 on Instinet. Total revenue in the quarter was $395.1 million, compared with $400.2 million a year ago, while net income was $15.5 million, or 7 cents a share. A year ago, the company earned a profit of $36.9 million, or 16 cents a share. Excluding various items, the company earned a profit $19.5 million, or 9 cents a share, in the latest quarter. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting a 10-cent-a-share profit on sales of $393.08 million. As announced earlier in the year, BMC expects revenue for fiscal 2006 to be in the range of $1.48 billion to $1.5 billion with pro forma earnings of 86 cents to 92 cents a share. Analysts had forecast an EPS profit of 85 cents on sales of $1.5 billion. The company did not give updated guidance for the current quarter, but in May, BMC said it was comfortable with analysts' expectations of first-quarter earnings of 13 cents a share on sales of about $340 million.
