TD Bank Financial Group and Ameritrade ( AMTD - Get Report) confirmed Tuesday that they are in talks regarding a potential merger of TD Waterhouse USA and Ameritrade. In a brief statement, the companies said they will make no further comment until an agreement is reached, but added that there are no assurances the discussions will result in a transaction. The statement came after the Financial Times reported that the online brokers were holding talks regarding a possible merger of TD Waterhouse and Ameritrade. TD Waterhouse is a unit of Toronto-Dominion Bank ( TD - Get Report). Earlier this month, Ameritrade fielded a merger offer from rival E*Trade ( ET - Get Report). The company said at the time that it was exploring strategic alternatives, but that it didn't consider itself for sale. Shares of Ameritrade were up 45 cents, or 3%, to $14.84. Toronto-Dominion was up $1.33, or 3%, to $42.68.
