CVS ( CVS) said Monday that same-store sales in its core business performed solidly in March.

The company said front-end same-store sales were up 5%, while pharmacy same-store sales were up about 10%. The results were released in a conference call held to announce CVS' purchase of 1,260 Eckerd drugstores from J.C. Penney.

CVS, which will vault past Walgreen ( WAG) as the No. 1 drugstore operator in the U.S. with the Eckerd buy, was recently up 94 cents, or 2.7%, to $35.72.

The company plans to release overall March same-stores sales on April 13.
