Janus Capital Group ( JNS) appointed Girard Miller, a 30-year veteran of the financial services industry, to be its executive vice president and chief operating officer.

"As I continue to focus on improving fund performance and broadening our product lineup, Girard will play a key role in implementing our strategy, orchestrating the operational aspects of our business and ensuring that Janus runs efficiently," said Mark Whiston, president and chief executive of the company, in a statement released Wednesday.

Miller is president and chief executive officer of ICMA Retirement, which manages and administers retirement plans for state and local governments.

At Janus, he will direct all day-to-day operations except its investment management subsidiaries and institutional sales department. His responsibilities will include finance, marketing, investor operations, information technology, legal, compliance, corporate affairs and governance, and human resources.

Meanwhile, Janus is also looking for a chief investment officer. "We're interviewing CIO candidates who could also serve as president, reflecting the vital role this person will play in leading the company's investment team and representing Janus in the marketplace," Whiston said. "We're being very deliberate in our search and, based on the high-caliber people we've seen, are confident that we'll attract the right person."

Janus shares closed down 1.3%, or 22 cents, at $16.84 Wednesday.
