United Airlines flight attendants voted Saturday to approve $412 million in pay cuts.

The beleaguered airline's parent corporation, UAL ( UAL), needs the cost savings as it aims to secure a $1.8 billion federal loan guarantee.

Some 12,000 United flight attendants approved the measure. The AFA represents 50,000 flight attendants at 26 airlines, including 24,000 at United.

The union said the turnout was about 67 percent of the eligible United attendants and that the measure was approved by 87 percent of the votes.
