Sextet suspected of national insurance fraud in court for remand extension

Six people suspected of defrauding the National Insurance Institute were brought before the Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday for extentions of their remand.

Among the six were are the head of the NII's Tel Aviv branch work accident department, Shlomo Palpala; attorney Daniel Barel, who handles claims against the NII; Barel's daughter Liora and his common-law wife Yulia Zirkin; orthopedic surgeon Tal Eliahu, and real estate agency owner Ofir Barzilay.

The six are suspected of staging work accidents, filing false claims and forging document over ten years, thus extracting millions of shekels from the NII.

The Tel Aviv police district fraud division and the NII have been conducting the investigation for one year and have at times used undercover investigators.
