Wind River Tumbles on Earnings Miss

Wind River Systems ( WIND) posted a wider fourth-quarter loss, but said it expected a 10% gain in current-year revenue, assuming economic conditions remain flat.

The software provider lost $50 million, or 64 cents a share, compared with a loss of $10.6 million, or 14 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. On a pro forma basis, the company lost $1.5 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with income of $15.5 million, or 19 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts had been expecting a loss of a penny per share, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.

Revenue rose to $80.5 million from $80.1 million in the third quarter, but fell 38% from the year-ago period.

For the first quarter, the company expects a pro forma loss between 2 cents and 4 cents a share on flat to down 5% revenue. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call are expecting income of a penny a share. For the year, the company expects a 10% revenue gain, assuming economic conditions remain constant.

Shares of Wind River were recently down 9.5% to $13.60 in Instinet premarket trading after closing at $15.03 Thursday.
