15 States with the Lowest Property Taxes

Each year, about $11.8 billion in property taxes goes unpaid, according to the National Tax Lien Association. Real-estate taxes add financial strain to households across the country, which is why many people consider the property tax rate of their state before moving into a new home.

So, which states should you consider if you're looking to minimize your tax obligations? WalletHub has analyzed and compared data from the U.S. Census Bureau to identify the states with the lowest property taxes.

To find the real-estate property tax rates, the site divided the "median real-estate tax payment" of each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia by its "median home price." These rates were then used to find the dollar amount paid as real-estate tax on a house worth the median value for a home in the U.S. ($175,700).

On average, each U.S. household spends $2,127 on property taxes annually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. If you're hoping to pay less, here are the 15 states with the lowest property taxes.
