6 Best Buys for January
I know it feels like the last thing you want to do after months of holiday shopping, but there are a few things you may want to hit the store for this month. The reason being, there are some items that actually hit their lowest price in January. Here are your January Best Buys.
Gym Memberships: It's up there as one of the top resolutions: get in shape! Gyms know this and are ready to help get you motivated with incentives. Usually there is some wiggle-room with advertised pricing. You can often times get the sales representative to throw in extras or waive the initiation fee. Other perks to ask for are complimentary training lessons and free additional months. If they offer a pay by month option you may want to consider that if you are like me and join gyms but by June aren't making it there too often!
Holiday Décor: Everything from wrapping paper and bows to artificial trees and lights will be drastically marked down this month. If you have the storage space to do so, stock up! This is also a good time to buy some small hostess gifts. See if the store offers a price adjustment period. This means if the items you purchase go down in price within a certain period of time (usually 14 days) you can get the difference between what you paid and the new sale price back. And with discounts going rapidly down weekly in January, you might be able to save even more money after you make your purchase. Be sure to ask if holiday merchandise is included under their price adjustment policy.
White Sales: Since 1878 when John Wanamaker, the father of department stores, first introduced White Sales, January has been the month for deals on linens. This tradition also includes sales on all bedding and towels. Often times you can find double the deals with manufacturers offering special pricing and the department store throwing in an additional discount or coupon.
Furniture: February is when most furniture manufacturers release their new designs, so that means stores have to clear the floor and make room for the new! To save even more money, ask about floor sample sales. These are pieces that have been on display but are in excellent condition. You can usually get an even better deal on these pieces. Here's a tip when buying large items like a sofa: measure your doorway to make sure the piece can get through the door.
Gift Cards: Immediately following Christmas people are trying to sell or exchange unwanted gift cards. Sites like Raise or Cardpool buy and sell gift cards at a discount. Some sell for up to 35% off of the face value with 10% being the average rate.
Television Sets: Historically Black Friday will offer some TVs at rock-bottom prices, but January offers significant deals as well. This is in anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday and folks wanting to get their big screens. Additionally, since it is after the holidays and stores have received a lot of returns, you can save even more if you ask for an open-box TV. These are returns that may not have the entire packaging or the box might be damaged, but the TV is fine. Make sure they offer the same warranty as any other set purchased.
