) -- President Barack Obama is expected to name CIA director Leon Panetta to replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates this week,

reported, citing unidentified administration sources.

Gen. David Petraeus will be nominated to replace Panetta as CIA chief and Lt. Gen. John Allen will replace Petraeus as Afghanistan commander.

also reported that diplomat Ryan Crocker will be named the next U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. Crocker was previously an ambassador to Iraq during the Bush administration.

The changes would likely take effect this summer and are expected to be announced on Thursday at the White House.
