What to Buy in June: Discounts Abound on Power Tools, Dinnerware And Gifts - TheStreet

Americans' bank accounts have just started to cool off after Memorial Day weekend, but they'll heat up soon with an abundance of retail shopping deals in June.

Up first is Father's Day, which pops up on the calendar on Sunday, June 19. But as usual, retailers are getting a head start on products for dads, and for shoppers looking for deals on household appliances, outdoor goods and early July 4th supplies.

"Father's Day Sales are off and running, offering smart savings on a variety of items that dads, and most anyone, need or want for use in the coming months," says Brent Shelton, an online shopping expert at Fat Wallet.

Shelton's "top" buying categories include the following retail categories:

Tools - "Power tools, cordless tool kits, tool storage and automotive tools are hot in June," Shelton says. "These timely price drops offer discounts up to 50% off top brands like Craftsman, Black & Decker, Milwaukee and DeWalt."

Home improvement goods - "Stores like Home Depot, Lowe's and Sears bring their best prices of the year on paints and stains, building materials, hardware, fixtures and tools needed to complete jobs in time to enjoy summer," Shelton adds.

Sports and camping gear - "Summer sports and outdoors items used for family fun get low pricing in June, including deep discounting on gear for camping, fishing and golfing at Bass Pro shop, Cabela's, and Golfsmith," he says. "Also, look for weekend sales on yard and pool games and toys at big box and specialty stores, especially for early July 4th sales.

Swimwear and lingerie also offer up some good buying value in June, says Courtney Jespersen, retail expert at NerdWallet.com. "Victoria's Secret sets the standard for swimwear and lingerie deals," Jesperson says. "Each June, the store holds its semi-annual sale with unprecedented deals. This year is perhaps even more unique, because the retailer has recently announced that it's phasing out its swimwear collection and that equates to deep discounts for consumers. We've already seen 60% off swimsuit sales."

Good deals can be had on gym memberships, too, Jesperson adds.

"Thanks to New Year's resolutions, gym memberships are in high demand in January," Jesperson says. "But by the time summer rolls around, more people turn to the outdoors for exercise. Use June as your opportunity to negotiate the price of a new gym membership. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount."

Mike Catania, chief technology officer at PromotionCode.org, in Tallahassee, says June is a great month to get a deal on household appliances. "We're seeing markdowns of between 15% - 20%, which doesn't include sales or special offers."

"A Dyson V6 vacuum cleaner, for example, that cost $800 last December, can be easily purchased for under $600 right now," Catania says. "It's also the prime season for printable coupons, so keep an eye on your would-be junk mail and you'll likely find some great store-wide coupons from the big box retailers."

Think food and drink this month, too, when you're shopping for juicy deals.

Entire categories of food products go on sale at lower-than-normal discounted prices when national featured sales are running, notes Jill Cataldo, founder of the popular Super-Couponing workshops. "For products with longer shelf lives, these promos represent good stock-up opportunities," she says. "For instance, June is National Dairy Month, and we'll see lower prices on eggs, milk, butter, ice cream, and yogurt."

Recognizing the lowest sale prices and pairing them with coupons isn't a difficult practice to learn, but you can save both time and effort by using a savings app to do the work for you, Cataldo adds. "My favorite app for that is Flipp, which combines multiple savings tools in one simple-to-use app," she says. "Flipp rounds up all of your local shopping circulars in one place, allowing you to create custom shopping lists from a variety of stores."

No doubt about it - June is a great month for bargain hunters. Get going now, for some of the best values you'll see all year.
