Places That Will Pay You to Live or Start a Business There

How would you like a cash bonus? Some startup money? A down payment on a home? Your student loans paid? We're not talking about the wedding gift from your parents, these are some of the incentives that communities around the globe are offering to get you to live in their city or state.

Whether you're looking for an affordable place to retire, a job in a new town, or a place to buy a home or start a business, here's your A-to-Z guide to all of the places that will pay you to move there or start a business there.

Many have heard of Alaska's Permanent Fund, funded by the state's oil revenues, which pays residents a nice bonus each year. In 2018 its annual payment to qualifying Alaskans, who also pay no state income tax, was $1,600. But there are also a number of programs offered by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation that include closing cost assistance, financing for manufactured homes and loan programs for veterans.

In April 2018, the Swiss village of Albinen granted its first financial incentive, equivalent to about $70,000, to a family to move there, according to media reports. To be eligible, family members must be under 45 years old and agree to live in the village for at least 10 years. Foreigners must have a Swiss residence permit. Albinen is a tiny Alpine village of about 250 people.

Accepted applicants get a residence and work permit for Denmark valid for two years plus possibility of extension, access to business development initiatives, and health care and education benefits which are extended to family members.

Michigan's Wayne County has a home buyer program that provides assistance of up to $7,500 to low- and moderate-income families to purchase a home in Wayne County. The money can be used for down payment or closing costs. The maximum purchase price is $119,000.

Lincoln, according to the town's website, is the seat of a 720-square-mile county with buffalo, farm animals and wildlife scattered across picturesque hillsides, and bills itself as the city "the size of a dime with the heart of a dollar."

Get up to $10,000 interest-free (and forgivable if you live in the home for five years) from the city of New Haven for a down payment or to help with closing costs. There's another $2,500 for city employees, teachers, police officers, firefighters or members of the military. But, wait, there's more. You may also qualify for $30,000 in energy-saving renovation upgrades, and free tuition to any in-state college for students who graduate from New Haven public schools in good academic and behavioral standing.

The Yukon has given away nearly 8,000 acres of farmland in the past decade, Reuters reported. Due to climate change, the territory is growing wetter and warmer, increasing the demand for farmland. A free 160-acre plot of land is available to Canadians and permanent residents who have been living in the Yukon for more than a year, according to Reuters, and are brave enough to farm it.
