declared a first-quarter dividend of 48 cents, equaling an annual rate of $1.92.

The annual payment represents an 11.6% increase over the rate paid in 2005. The dividend will be paid on March 30 to shareholders of record March 15.

Shares of Mercury General were gaining 17 cents to $56.22 Monday.
