Looking for a job? Here's a cool opportunity that just might be a great new start for the right person.

The Position: Pilot for Southwest Airlines (Stock Quote: LUV)

Location: Depends on base assignment

Job Duties: Responsible for flying fleet of Boeing 737 planes between 64 cities. Top priorities are safety and passenger comfort.

The Company: Southwest Airlines is a major domestic airline specializing in short trips and low fares.

Requirements: Pilots must have FAA airline transport pilot certificate. Must be at least 23 years old with a current FAA Class 1 Medical Certificate and be able to pass FAA-mandated drug test. Must have 2,500 flight hours, and at least 1,000 hours of Turbine aircraft experience as the pilot in command. Southwest only considers flight time in a fixed-wing aircraft — not simulators, helicopters, etc. At least 200 flight hours must be from the last 36-month period. College degree preferred. Must have valid driver's license. Will be required to provide letters of recommendation from three people who can attest to the person's pilot skills from first-hand observation. Must be able to work quickly — Southwest boasts an average of 20-minute turnaround between flights.

Extra Perks: Southwest offers a comprehensive benefits plan. Employees and their spouses, parents and dependent children all get free Southwest flight privileges, and employees can also earn "buddy passes" for other friends and relatives. There are eight U.S. pilot bases, and pilots can choose their preference based on seniority.

Interesting Info: Pilots do not necessarily have to live in the city in which they are based. Nearly 50% of their pilots commute to work. The scheduled lines are centered around early morning or evening hours. Southwest also has a "trip trade" scheduling system that allows pilots to arrange their schedule to their convenience.

Other Opportunities: Southwest has openings for other in-flight positions such as flight attendants, training instructors and in-flight supervisors. There are lots of opportunities at the terminals, in the hangars and in the company's corporate offices. They also need tech specialists and reservations agents.
