The position: Ombudsman at National Public Radio (NPR)
Location: Washington, D.C.
Job duties: The Ombudsman is the public's representative to NPR in matters of ethics, accuracy and fairness in reporting. The main purpose of the position is to bring transparency to the journalism decision-making processes at NPR. Acts as an independent reporter who investigates complaints and reports findings to the audience. Helps the audience understand how decisions are made, how the practice of journalism is evolving and what that means to them. Writes and speaks on matters of journalistic ethics and standards, including through columns and blog posts. Responds directly to questions, comments and complaints from listeners and users.
The company: NPR was founded in 1970 to provide national news programming on the radio. Today, NPR programming is carried by 910 member stations and heard by more than 27 million listeners every week.
Requirements: Requires at least 15 years of full-time professional journalism experience or exceptional achievement in the field. Must have a record of adherence to the highest standards of journalistic ethics and personal integrity. Requires strong writing and public speaking skills along with a thorough familiarity with the SPJ Code of Ethics, AP Stylebook and other journalism resources. Must have proficiency with social media, including blogging, plus a proven ability to earn the trust of staff and the public. Broadcast experience is highly desirable. Ombudsman experience is a plus.
