Great Free Gifts With Magazines

Great Free Gifts With Magazines

This Christmas, buy someone a magazine subscription and keep the gift for yourself (or vice versa).

Economists may insist that the recession is over, but with unemployment just below 10%, times are still tough on Main Street. Consumers are keeping their purse strings tight as the shopping season approaches, and despite big Black Friday discounts, most analysts expect holiday spending to increase only slightly from last year. So if you don’t have much room in your budget for buying gifts – or you’re just really cheap – what are you to do? Well, here’s one solution: Many magazines will offer you a free gift – a T-shirt or a tote bag, for instance – when you subscribe. Order a magazine that interests you, then when the free gift arrives in the mail, wrap it and give it to a lucky recipient. Alternatively, you could buy a subscription for someone else, but keep the gift for yourself – that way you’re actually getting something out of the transaction (other than their gratitude). This is a fantastic magazine, and a steal at $10 for 12 issues. While you can occasionally get it even cheaper than that on third-party sites or using a coupon code, subscribing through the website gets you this very stylish T-shirt. Photo Credit: CondeNast.com
When you sign up for ESPN The Magazine you get a year’s subscription (26 issues) for $26 (78% off the cover price) and a veritable smorgasbord of free stuff. Included in the gift package is an ESPN T-shirt, travel cooler, coffee tumbler and water bottle. That’s four gifts for distant relatives! On top of that you also get access to the “Insider” section of ESPN.com’s website, which would normally cost you around $40 a year. Photo Credit: Espn.com
The new year is a little more than a month away. Do you have a 2011 calendar yet? If not, order a year’s subscription to Vogue and get a calendar full of ridiculously attractive people being ridiculously stylish. Photo Credit: Vogue.com
For $21 you get a year’s subscription to Bon Appétit, plus a downloadable cookbook, Tastes of Italy. Either is perfect for the cook in your family – just decide whether you want the magazine or the cookbook more. You also get a tote bag. Photo Credit: BonAppetit.com
The free gift for signing up for a year’s subscription to Us Weekly? Another subscription to Us Weekly. The celebrity gossip magazine is currently running a holiday special that allows new subscribers to give a second subscription as a gift, so you can gift a subscription to your celebrity-loving aunt without her ever knowing that you got it for free. Get a one-year subscription to the magazine for $29 and you’ll also get two short publications: The Annual Buying Guide and 50 Steps to a Richer Retirement. Keep the magazine and give the two booklets to someone who isn’t very smart with their money. (Or you could just send them a link to Mainstreet.com. Whatever works.) Photo Credit: ConsumerReports.org
Are you planning your wedding way in advance, or do you get married on a regular basis? Then subscribe to Brides and give the complimentary tote bag as a Christmas gift. You also get a cookbook, which you can gift to your new husband in hopes that he’ll learn to cook. Photo Credit: Brides.com
An old favorite from my youth, subscribers to Highlightsget a free “Hidden Pictures” 2011 calendar. Give the subscription to your kid for $34.44 a year, and keep the calendar around for the next time a classmate’s birthday comes around. Photo Credit: Highlights.com
