American Airlines (Stock quote: AMR) is in the midst of a nationwide fare sale, good through midnight CDT Sept. 3, with one-way fares starting as low as $49.

This recession-sparked sale, intended to boost travel during the traditionally weak fall and winter seasons, is an Internet deal, with tickets bookable on the American Airlines Web site.

Sample one-way fares, before taxes and fees, include: Minneapolis-Chicago from $49; Los Angeles-Las Vegas starting at $59; Orlando-Miami from $79. Tickets are good for travel from Sept. 9 through Jan. 7, 2010 and must be purchased at least 14 days before departure.

As always with fare sales, travelers should be aware of restrictions. The cheap fares in this sale are good for travel Monday through Thursday and on Saturday. There are blackout dates around the major holidays. Blackout dates are: Nov. 20, Nov. 28-30, Dec. 18-19, 23-24, 26-30 and then again on Jan. 2-4, 2010. Typically, discounted seats sell quickly, so the best deals belong to the quick and the nimble.
