AirTran Airways, the Orlando-based low-cost carrier, launched a nationwide fare sale today through midnight E.D.T. Thursday, offering one-way fares for as low as $39, before taxes and fees. The sale is the latest in a cascade of airfare sales by assorted airlines that fear a slow Fall season will exacerbate their problems with weak consumer demand, swine flu fears and volatile fuel prices.
The AirTran (Stock Quote: AAI) sale is good for travel from Aug. 18 through Dec. 16, with blackout dates around Thanksgiving: Nov. 24 and 25 and Nov. 28-30. The lowest fares are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Fridays and Sundays are not as cheap, but sale prices apply then, too.
Examples are $39 one-way between Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Charlotte on the cheapest days and $54 from Orlando to Atlantic City. Those fares jump to $59 and $74 respectively on Fridays and Sundays.
As usual with airfare sales, the very lowest prices don’t apply to all seats on a given flight, so the best deals go to the fast and the flexible.
