Pull out your gift lists and get your credit cards ready. More than 700 retailers are offering free shipping today for the second year in a row, as part of the second annual Free Shipping Day.
All the big names are taking part: Amazon (Stock Quote: AMZN), Target (Stock Quote: TGT), Toys “R” Us and Apple (Stock Quote: AAPL), just to name a few. If you want to buy some hip T-shirts for each of your friends, try Busted Tees. If you’re looking for creative photo albums for the holidays, order some from Shutterfly.
This dream day for shoppers was started by Luke and Maisie Knowles, founders of Freeshipping.org, as a respite for consumers who put off their holiday shopping too long. Freeshipping.org guarantees that any item you order today will be delivered by Christmas Eve. (To all our Jewish readers, we’re sorry, but this might not be the best way to get gifts in time for the last night of Hanukkah.)
Free Shipping Day may be more useful this year than in other recent years. According to CNN Money, less than half of all Americans are done with their holiday shopping and 19% haven’t even started yet, the most procrastinators since 2004.
So, if you’re one of the many people who have held off on making big purchases, now could be the time. But be sure to check the retail Web site for their return policy so you don’t end up dishing out more money later to send back an impulse buy. Check out MainStreet’s recent article on best store return policies.
Freeshipping.org also features shipping coupons for 1850 stores for the rest of the year, and even some useful tips on how to save money. If nothing else, it’s something good to read while you wait for your orders to be processed.
