After a rash of baby product recalls, Toys “R” Us and Babies "R" Us stores are giving shoppers 20% off one item if they trade in any used crib or certain other baby products for a limited time.

Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 20, Shoppers can trade in any crib, car seat, bassinet, stroller, play yard, high chair or travel system without a receipt, and receive 20% off a new baby item in any of those categories made by participating manufacturers.

"The ‘Great Trade-In’ event places an emphasis on specific baby products, such as cribs and car seats that, due to safety concerns, may not be the best candidates to be handed down or resold,” the retailer says.  “Beyond recalls, certain older and used baby items can be potentially unsafe for a variety of reasons, including damage or lack of compliance with recent advances in product safety standards.”

In 2007, Toys “R” Us stores along with several other toymakers and retailers like Wal-Mart (Stock Quote: WMT), Target (Stock Quote: TGT), Sears (Stock Quote: SHLD) and Costco Wholesale (Stock Quote: COST) faced lawsuits and harsh criticism over allegedly continuing to sell toys covered in harmful lead paint.
