Monday reported strong April sales, but they were less impressive than the previous two months.
Same-store sales at Wendy's company-owned restaurants rose 8.3% to 8.4% in the sales period ended May 2. Sales growth at U.S. franchises was 6.3% to 6.4%. Both sales rates are up sharply from the pace of growth in April 3003, but in both March and February of this year, the company's flagship stores posted sales gains of almost 10%.
Wendy's introduced three new chicken sandwiches in April and said it will promote them with national advertising through the end of May. The company is also testing a new low-carbohydrate menu.
Sales at the U.S. operations of Tim Horton's chain jumped 12.4%, compared to a 1.1% gain a year ago. Canadian sales rose 9% to 9.2%. The unit started selling a new egg salad sandwich in the second quarter.
Shares closed at $39 Friday.
