In economic news, weekly initial jobless claims rose to 413,000 from last week's revised 398,000. Elsewhere, August nonmanufacturing data beat analysts' expectations and remained at a record high of 65.1, helping the stock indices maintain moderate gains.

Twelve of the 21 components closed the day down, while nine finished higher. Of the decliners,

edged up 53 cents, or 1.3%, to $39.99.

Overall, the index is up 111.2 points, or 11.1%, from its start at 1000 on July 3.
