Stocks continue to surge behind techs; BSkyB and Canal Plus hit an obstacle; legal giant Blackmun dies.

Stocks were trading sharply higher at midmorning. The

Nasdaq Composite Index

was posting strong gains, while

Dow Jones Industrial Average

was riding a surge in

Major European bourses were mixed at midday, while Asian markets were flat. Japan's
