The gulf between the winners and the losers on the Net just went quantum.

Excite

, the part of

Excite@Home

(ATHM) - Get Autohome Inc. Report

that I once found so exciting, has ceased to amaze anybody.

Go

(GO) - Get Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. Report

, the

Disney

(DIS) - Get Walt Disney Company Report

outfit that was once

Infoseek

, goes down every day. It is just plain nasty.

Lycos

TheStreet Recommends

(LCOS)

, which I am long and looking quite wrong on, gets hammered pretty much every day. I am glad the market is closed on Sunday, or maybe it would happen twice!

Now I know

AOL

(AOL)

and

Yahoo!

(YHOO)

haven't been winners in this environment, but they aren't killing us either. They are going to be the big winners. All that has happened lately is that I am even more sure of this stance. (For example, the inability of

AltaVista

(ALTA)

to price puts them at a distinct disadvantage from which they might not be able to recover.

Once there was a time when it was anyone's game: Lycos, Infoseek, Excite, Yahoo! or AOL. Now it looks like game over.

Yahoo! and AOL won.
