NEW YORK (

TheStreet

) -- Keith Olbermann has been suspended without pay from MSNBC after donating to three Democratic candidates.

"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

The host of MSNBC's prime-time news and political commentary show

Countdown with Keith Olbermann

gave the maximum individual donation of $2,400 to three candidates in Tuesday's election. He donated to Reps. Paul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, as well as Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway.

NBC News, MSNBC's parent organization, prohibits political contributions by its journalists without prior approval of the president.

In a statement to

Politico

, which first reported the news, Olbermann said he "did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns nor to any others in this election or any previous ones." He also said that he had not "previously donated to any political campaign at any level."

Olbermann made his contribution to Grijalva's campaign on Oct. 28, the day the candidate appeared as a guest on Countdown.
