(MCD) - Get McDonald's Corporation (MCD) Report

posted a jump in sales for September and the third quarter after the closing bell on Tuesday.

The company said total systemwide sales increased 11.1% in September and 10.8% for the third quarter.

Earlier in the day, Smith Barney upgraded the company's shares, saying the restaurant chain has been successful in pushing its new premium salads and McGriddles.

said same-store sales in its U.S. outlets rose 3.5% for September. The company confirmed earnings guidance for the year on the strength of the new chicken strips it introduced to compete with McDonald's.

Both companies will report third-quarter results the last week of October.

Shares of McDonald's rose 2.6%, or 62 cents, to $24.72 Tuesday.
