At least 33 people were killed Monday at Virginia Tech after a gunman went on a shooting rampage on the campus. It is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Many of the dead were students at the university in Blacksburg. The gunman, described as a man in his 20s, was among those killed. More than 20 other people were injured and were being treated at area hospitals.
Some of the victims were shot in classrooms. Dozens of police and emergency personnel responded to the scene, and it wasn't immediately clear if the shooter had been killed by police or if he had taken his own life. He was reportedly armed with two handguns.
The shootings took place at two locations, West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory, and about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering classroom building.
university will remain closed on Tuesday, but will hold a convocation tomorrow afternoon.
