Gary B. Smith chatted on Yahoo! on Wednesday, July 12, at 5 p.m. EDT.

laura_the_street:

Gary B. Smith is here and we are ready to start!!

gsmith4:

I am baaaaacccck. And I am ready! Please start firing away! I can answer ANYTHING!

banshee962 asks:

Hi Gary.....what does the chart for CMRC tell you these days???

gsmith4:

Huge up day today on big vol. Gotta be bullish on it now.

yarnis asks:

How do you see emc and mlnm technically?

gsmith4:

EMC is doing fine. Maybe ready to spring up. MLNM isn't that great. Near a new high, but I'll like it better over 145.

hanleyman2 asks:

Hey Gary, any thoughts on the Russell 2000 Index direction short term?

gsmith4:

Oh, most def. moving higher after today.

suman_majumdar asks:

Gary: what is your take on BBH, in light of its spectacular run-up during the last six weeks? Thanks.

gsmith4:

Nothing to knock on it, but too extended for this guy.

banshee962 asks:

What's going on with Technitrol (TRL)? Does this look good to you still?

gsmith4:

Well, TRL Is Total Renal Care. That chart looks fine. TNL looks fine also, but a bit extended, so I'd pass right now.

dneufarth asks:

Hello Chartman. ARBA up huge today. How does it's future look from a TA perspective?

gsmith4:

Equally huge! Big vol today too.

terra_digita asks:

Gary, your opinion on CNET?

gsmith4:

Mega move today. But....still risky as the downtrend stayed intact. I think there are easier plays right now.

fbriola asks:

Love your analysis on TSCM! What do you think of RF Micro Devices (RFMD) at these levels??

gsmith4:

Uh, maybe building a base. But I wouldn't bother with it.

suman_majumdar asks:

Any pullback in sight for QQQ in near-term?

gsmith4:

Shoot, that %^&% thing pulls back every time it goes up lately! Still, I remain bullish on it.

DWALF50 asks:

Gary- ARBA is at $115 after hours. Do you see any major resistance between here and the old high? If you owned it where would you place a stop?

gsmith4:

I'd place my stop under today's open. I don't see anything in its way until the 150s.

erfl5737 asks:

Gary, PALM had a big move today. Does it go down or up after July 27th? When to acquire more?

gsmith4:

I don't know diddly about 7/27. But, the bunt sign is off on this stock: I'd be a buyer right now (although maybe safer to see if it pulls back...)

fbriola asks:

How about BRCD? Seemed a little weak today in a strong market.

gsmith4:

Well, it's right at a new high, so that's understandable.. Still moving up, though.

dneufarth asks:

NAZ 4475. Still sticking with this number? by when?

gsmith4:

I gotta think by Auggie 1 at this point.

yarnis asks:

What do you thin of the dsl stocks like afci ,efnt and gspn?

gsmith4:

GSPN is the one to go with, I think.

tanoakie asks:

Gary, in markets like today's, if your stock comes in at the middle of the session, do you send in a new order intraday? Or does the cash wait on the sidelines till the next day?

gsmith4:

I only do EOD, so if I'm out midday, I'm out until the next day.

rp_johnson asks:

What do you think of the movement in YHOO today?

gsmith4:

Hey, it made Crameroonie happy! But, super move. Still, all it did was move back into congestion. I don't loathe it here. But, don't love it either.

dneufarth asks:

What's the TA on ZPLS reveal?

gsmith4:

Boy, why are you fooling with that? The stock is so thin, you can see through it. Anyway, I'd steer clear. Stock looks dull.

fbriola asks:

Is one up day enough to change your view on YHOO?

gsmith4:

Sure, one day is enough to change my view on ANY stock, if the move is major. YHOO had a major move today. So, I was bearish yesterday. Neutral today.

clcs33 asks:

Okay GB: You thought 'Perfect Storm' was boring. You thought 'Mission Impossible 2' was boring. But you like WATCHING GOLF ON TV??? Explain that. Is it because it's lushly photographed?

gsmith4:

No, it's, uh...because I'm basically a nerd. I mean, shoot: I get excited about charts!!

clcs33 asks:

Can Tiger break Byron Nelson's record? Or for that matter break YOUR course record at Lehigh Valley Country Club?

gsmith4:

No one will ever break Nelson's record. And I only caddied at Lehigh CC. My course record is at Locust Vally CC!! So there!

fbriola asks:

How about MSFT? Seems to be resistance around $82.

gsmith4:

Concur. Sort of like the Nasdaq chart...as of a day ago.

tanoakie asks:

Is NOK dead wood or hold?

gsmith4:

Dead-ish, we'll call it.

suman_majumdar asks:

From its end of Feb low, C has ramped about 40%. Any further upside left?

gsmith4:

Definitely. Needs a big up day and then I think it can run to the mid 80s.

dneufarth asks:

Herbie's been hinting at arb action on BRAD. What sayeth the chart?

gsmith4:

Okay, first: don't pay attention to Herb. He knows nothing! Two, BRAD looks dead, chartwise. I'd pass...

yarnis asks:

Foundry broke congestion last week, is the dip today a chance to get in?

gsmith4:

Yeah, but with a pretty tight stop, say about 109.

grouchygourmand asks:

A few months back you were long LPTHA......do you see it going higher than the 45 it is now?

gsmith4:

Yep. (It's now LPTH, btw.) I think it moves back to the 60s.

rp_johnson asks:

What's your timeframe on a usual trade? Is there even a "usual"?

gsmith4:

Ha. Some of my bad trades you'd have to say are most UNusual! But, about 3 days or so.

fbriola asks:

Is Cisco stuck in a trading range?

gsmith4:

Yep. And I don't like the looks of it...

suman_majumdar asks:

How about JNJ?

gsmith4:

Working off the big push from late June. But, I still like it.

tanoakie asks:

INKT for real or dead cat bounce here?

gsmith4:

Cat time, I think. But, always respect a stock when it gaps up...

yarnis asks:

You mentioned juniper in your column today. it seems today it tested its high. double top or beakout?

gsmith4:

Still undecided I'm afraid...

yukonv8 asks:

G are you still bullish on Tricord(TRCD)?

gsmith4:

No reason to be anything but: the uptrend is intact!

clcs33 asks:

Are your girls pro or con on the Shark Skin Body suits?

gsmith4:

They would wear those in a minute..but only to keep warm. (BTW, they're verboten for the Olympic trials!)

yarnis asks:

Adam liked pmcs on the tv show in may. Does today's action suggest a return to 240?

gsmith4:

Yeah, but I think it needs to build a small base first.

fbriola asks:

Getting away from tech for a minute, what are your thoughts on Phillip Morris (MO)?

gsmith4:

Yuck right now. Had its heyday, I think.

dneufarth asks:

Gary, we know you trade, but do you play in the 'buy and hold' world at all? If so, care to reveal any positions?

gsmith4:

Well, I don't really do any buy and hold for myself. That said, my Mother-in-Law wanted to buy some shares of stock for my kids, and asked me what she should buy and hold. I told here.....MSFT.

yarnis asks:

Is merrill lynch extended or can the move continue and to what level?

gsmith4:

Extended. But, if the pullback is mild, it can def. go up a lot more.

DWALF50 asks:

Gary- BVSN got hammered but stopped at its 200 Day MA. Is that reason enough to hold on for a bounce if you still own it?

gsmith4:

Oh, I'd def. be out of that one. Very shortable to tell the truth.

scilacci1 asks:

Have another look at VSH, Gary. Would you still short in on any strength? Or do I see a reverse head-and-shoulder here?

gsmith4:

I'd still be on the short side.

ForbesB23 asks:

Gary, Love your articles. KM, breaks up on huge volume and blows through the 50 day MA? What are your thoughts?

gsmith4:

Wow! But...the downtrend since late April is still intact. So, I'd probably avoid it right now on either side.

laura_the_street:

How about Ford?

gsmith4:

It's had a great July, but like VSH, still in a downtrend.

grouchygourmand asks:

Would you be buying, selling or holding JDSU now Gary?

gsmith4:

Shorting it. Certainly not holding it, or buying it.

yarnis asks:

The volume on neta was huge . was today the start of a big move up?

gsmith4:

Could be. I bet it pulls back though...and then I'd pounce.

xtoymanx asks:

GBS--How about ISLD?

gsmith4:

Nice bounce today. Neutral on it, though, as it's just not clear cut to me. Bullish if I was forced to choose.

tanoakie asks:

Bob Brogan sees this as a Nazz top. Is he someone we should listen to as opposed to Herbie?

gsmith4:

A top?? Well, I don't know the fellow's work but I am def. on the opposite side of that call.

umilltee asks:

Do you believe in playing hot issue ipos in the after-market?

gsmith4:

I don't, no.

laura_the_street:

Volume on VNTR seems to be picking up. Any opinion on where this stock is headed short-term?

gsmith4:

A pretty nice looking double bottom. UP looks good right now.

dneufarth asks:

Regarding 'Columnist Conversation': you folks take shots at one another (just like the one at Herb here). I rarely see emoticons. Do you know each other well enough to read between the lines so to speak?

gsmith4:

No, I really do hate Herb's guts! (Nah, just kidding. I know Herb and everyone very well. Herb and I have been on TV together, have had drinks together. So, yeah, it's really all in fun. He'd say the same thing I'm sure.

ForbesB23 asks:

MANU, can it jump past resistance in the 60-70 range. Thanks.

gsmith4:

Boy, has that stock moved lately. I don't think it can move to 70, though, w/o a pullback.

katwomansz asks:

Can ESRX break through resistance at 64?

gsmith4:

Oh, no prob.

jss888 asks:

What does the chart look like on ITWO ?

gsmith4:

Ah, it's okay. Nothing special though.

yarnis asks:

AOL just reached the top of the price of its resistance. Do you think it will break upwards or retest 52?

gsmith4:

Aol has put in a good bottom. And good vol today. Should move up.

dneufarth asks:

How about a read on KR?

gsmith4:

Boy, there's a stock that doesn't get asked about much. Anyway, chart looks solid. Slow mover though.

erfl5737 asks:

Gary, in the short term which is the better pick: BRCD or PMCS?

gsmith4:

Maybe PMCS, but only with a pullback.

sdcgnt asks:

Opinion on Andrew Corp.-ANDW, please?

gsmith4:

Don't like it right now. Looks like it has further work to do on the downside.

leighmasoncombes asks:

Hello - What is your opinion on Lucent? Short term/long term. Thanks.

gsmith4:

The same: stay away. It's taking up residence in Congestionville right now.

umilltee asks:

ACCL....would you play it here?

gsmith4:

No, not enough bars to give me a read.

grouchygourmand asks:

PDLI announced split......possible run up to play?

gsmith4:

Well, the split was announced yest (or early today) and the stock actually went down. So, dont' buy it because of that.

sdcgnt asks:

Does Cypress Semi-CY have farther to run?

gsmith4:

If you have profits now, I'd take 'em.

m_rabinoff asks:

Gary, any thoughts on how far California Amplifier can rally before a pullback? Also, what are your thoughts on Sensar?

gsmith4:

I'm surprised CAMP hasn't pulled back already!

sdcgnt asks:

Do you track various sectors for ideas? Any favorite sectors along here?

gsmith4:

Right now, I like anyting tech to be honest.

jss888 asks:

Looks like GBLX broke out today - Your thoughts

gsmith4:

They're being bought by EXDS right? (or at least part of them is.) I'd stay clear. Too much of an arb. play.

wsamson_7121 asks:

What are your impressions of Compaq? Will it be profitable in the future?

gsmith4:

You mean the company? Hey, who knows. And...what are profits anyway??

voyager_ned asks:

What do you think about internet mutual funds?

gsmith4:

Glad I wasn't in them, that's for sure. But, I have to guess they're a happy lot today.

Bandwidth_2000 asks:

Sorry joined late, familiar with PLXT and thoughs- Also keep up the great work Gary.

gsmith4:

Thanks, Bandy! PLXT looks pretty good right here: nice rise, straightforward pullback.

dneufarth asks:

Cramer mentioned buying AVP today as it was down on rotation, but has good mgt and a plan. How's the chart look?

gsmith4:

Hah. He's always looking to buy the stocks I'd short! And this is sure one of them.

katwomansz asks:

How much (%) should TA be combined with fundamentals?

gsmith4:

100% TA, 0$ fundamentals. That is, if you want to make money!

Seriously, here's my thought on you, I, or anyone who's NOT the CEO of a company: you don't know jack about what's really going on. Shoot, even my wife, who's a top exec at an internet company calls to ask ME why her companies stock is going up or down. So, if you think you can buy or sell on fundy's you're kidding yourself.

voyager_ned asks:

Do you know anything about National Tech Team--TEAM?

gsmith4:

Only that it has a lousy chart. Maybe at bottom, but who wants to play with a $3 stock?

katwomansz asks:

Why all the action in KEI Keithley? it was a snoozer for years. Is it over extended now?

gsmith4:

It was overextended. Pulled back, tough, and I might be a buyer if it breaks up again.

jumes20 asks:

What do you think about ALSC?

gsmith4:

Neutral. Not far from a high, but far enough after the recent drop to make me worry.

umilltee asks:

PCNTF took a big hit from the 70s to $15. Jumped $4 1/2 to $20 today. Any take?

gsmith4:

Mega move, for sure. To me, I think the downtrend is broken.

davidinil asks:

Gary, how bout your take on PRSF?

gsmith4:

Bullish, but I wish it hadn't gone straight up for 3 days in a row. Those always worry me.

erfl5737 asks:

Better to play GLW than JDSU at present? When to get back into JDSU?

gsmith4:

GLW has far and away the better chart. JDSU I'd avoid until it a) puts in some sort of bottom, or b) makes a new high.

xtoymanx asks:

G, How was attendance at the live conference? Steep prices!!!

gsmith4:

You know, I agree, and if we do it again, I'd vote for same prices, but maybe a 6 hour session. Attendence was okay. But, just okay. I did have fun though.

dneufarth asks:

Off topic and Enquiring minds want to know -- what are you doing now that you have the house to yourself for a while?

gsmith4:

Ha! It's funny because just today, my wife flew to Boston, so I am a total bachelor. So....there'll be lot of beer drinking, a lot of pork rind eating, and a lot of Adult movies!

Okay, that's it. You guys have been just great. (JUST great, not anything more, mind you!) I'll be back next month, assuming I don't kill myself with my new pork rind diet!
