"Chinese supercomputer" is a trending search topic following news that Chinese researchers have built the world's fastest supercomputer.

The Tianhe-1A is almost 50% more powerful than its predecessor and can perform more than 2.5 thousand trillion floating point operations per second (petaflops).

The system uses 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 CPUs, which makes it more power efficient. The system consumes 4.04 megawatts, compared with about 12 megawatts of energy the system would consume if it only used CPUs.

The system is based at the National University of Defense Technology in China.

"Financial aid" is a popular search topic after college tuition costs are up again this fall.

At public four-year schools average in-state tuition and fees rose 7.9% this fall, or $555, to $7,605, according to the College Board's "Trends in College Pricing." The average price at private nonprofit colleges increased 4.5%, or $1,164, to $27,293.

Students and their families are turning to the federal government's aid to make higher education more affordable in tough economic times.

"Pontiac" is a trending topic after the

General Motor's

car brand officially ceased to exist on October 31.

The end of the brand occurred at midnight when GM's agreements with Pontiac dealers expired. The American car manufacturer is most known for its muscle cars, such as the Firebird Trans Am, GTO, and the Catalina 2+2.

After a significant drop off in popularity and sales, the car maker has shut down the line. The brand was 84 years old.
