Locals and tourists alike are so obsessed with Broadway's Hamilton that it might seem like the only musical on Broadway. The show about America's first Secretary of the Treasury and one of the country's most charismatic founding fathers won 11 Tony Awards last weekend.
Ticket prices have soared since it opened on Broadway a year ago. Since the cheapest resale tickets are selling for about $800 each, buying tickets could drain a vacation fund for the next few summers.
Yet Hamilton isn't the only show with rave reviews. Broadway musicals have been thriving over the past few year years. Below are five critically acclaimed musicals that are more affordable, with resale prices provided by TiqIQ.

If Broadway show tunes aren't for you, the bluegrass music of Bright Star might be. Singer-songwriter Edie Brickell and comedian-banjo player Steve Martin wrote the score. When most people think of Shakespeare, they don't necessarily think "funny." But since opening last year, Something Rotten! has shown audiences just how funny Shakespeare can be. This hilarious musical is about two brothers in sixteenth century England who write the world's first musical while William Shakespeare's dramas hog the spotlight. Something Rotten! features Christian Borle of TV's Smash playing Shakespeare, a role that won Borle his second Tony Award. But see it soon. Borle will leave the cast to star in Falsettos, which begins previews in September.
School of Rock

One challenge with taking a family to see a Broadway musical is picking a show that appeals to everyone. Based on the 2003 Jack Black movie, School of Rock features original music composed by theater icon Andrew Lloyd Webber, and is one of Broadway's best-reviewed shows. The cast includes Sierra Boggess, who gained fame performing in Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, Alex Brightman, who was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and is among Broadway's most talented young performers. If the diversity of Hamilton's cast appeals to you, then Shuffle Along is an excellent, affordable option. In 1921, the original production broke racial barriers in entertainment. The 2016 production reveals the true story of the backstage drama and includes the original show's memorable numbers. Star Audra McDonald, who has won a record six performance Tony Awards, is with the show through July 24, when she goes on maternity leave.
