It was a week that started bleakly but ended euphorically, with the Dow at its high for the year.

put in their fourth winning day of the week after a global selloff Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 155.91 points, or 1.7%, to 9505.96; the

S&P 500

added 18.76 points, or 1.9%, to 1026.13, and the Nasdaq Composite edged up 31.68 points, or 1.6%, to 2020.90.

Friday's bullishness was fueled by the best

existing-home sales

data since 1999, and positive comments on the economy by

For the week, the Dow gained about 2%, the S&P 500 advanced 2.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.8%.
