It was a week that started bleakly but ended euphorically, with the Dow at its high for the year.

On Friday,

the major averages

put in their fourth winning day of the week after a global selloff Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 155.91 points, or 1.7%, to 9505.96; the

S&P 500

added 18.76 points, or 1.9%, to 1026.13, and the Nasdaq Composite edged up 31.68 points, or 1.6%, to 2020.90.

Friday's bullishness was fueled by the best

existing-home sales

data since 1999, and positive comments on the economy by

Ben Bernanke

For the week, the Dow gained about 2%, the S&P 500 advanced 2.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.8%.
