Senator Ben Sasse Has Me Cheering. Please Listen Why.

Mish

The Nebraska GOP threatens to censure Senator Sasse over Trump. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, Sasse delivers a message you should take to heart.

Political Rarity, Sasse Keeps a Difficult Promise

Sasse made a promise four years ago to put the Constitution and his conscious ahead of the party.

It's a rarity. Sasse kept a difficult promise.  He now faces censure.

Sasse responds to Nebraska GOP State Central Committee

In a video posted on YouTube, Nebraska's Republican senator repeats his disagreements with President Trump in advance of a GOP state meeting on Feb. 13 that may consider an effort to censure him.

Sasse's blistering message to the committee is along the lines of "go ahead, censure me".

His message to the public is far more notable. Please play the video. It is about 5 minutes.

Notable Excerpts

  • When Melissa and I ran  four years ago we pledged to put the constitution ahead of party politics. You gave me standing ovations.
  • My election night speech was a simple promise that I would always vote my conscious even if it might be against the partisan stream.  You cheered.
  • Now, many of you are hacked off that I condemned Trump's lies that led to a riot.
  • Let's be clear. The anger in the state party has never been about me violating principle or abandoning conservative policy. I am one of the most conservative voters in the Senate.
  • The anger has always simply been about me not bending a knee to one guy.
  • But my disagreements with Trump have never been personal. They have always been about genuine affection for the constitutional order, something every American regardless of party should share.
  • January 6 is going to leave a scar. For 220 years one of the most beautiful things about America has been a peaceful transfer of power. But what we saw three weeks ago was ugly, shameful mob violence to disrupt a Constitutionally-mandated meeting of Congress to affirm that peaceful transfer of power.
  • It happened because the president lied to you. He lied about the election results for 60 days. Despite losing 60 straight court challenges, many of them handed down by Trump-appointed judges.
  • He lied by saying the vice president could violate his constitutional oath and declare a new winner. That wasn't true.
  • He then riled a mob that attacked the Capitol, many chanting "hang Pence".
  • If that president was a Democrat we both know how you would respond. But because he had Republican behind his name, you are defending him.
  • Personality cults aren't conservative. Conspiracy theories aren't conservative. Lying that an election has been stolen isn't conservative.
  • Acting like politics is a religion isn't conservative,
  • You are welcome to censure me again, but let's be clear about why this is happening. It's because I still believe, like you used to, that politics isn't about the weird worship of one dude.

Reflection on the Truth

That was one of the best political speeches in history, and it comes at a critical time for the Republican party.

It's time for reflection and admission of the Truth.

And the painful truth is Trump is not the Messiah. He repeatedly lied about many things with escalating repercussions that culminated with a Capitol riot.

Not Fit to Be President

Regardless of what you think about his policies, Trump's actions prove one thing.

Trump is not fit to be president and never was. He tried to hijack an election and get vice president Pence to go along with it.

Weird Worship of One Dude

Sasse's best line was towards the end. "Politics isn't about the weird worship of one dude."

Yet sadly that is what has become of the Republican party. Trump cultists tried to hijack it, and clearly did in some states.

Trump Cultists Attack Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney, a Republican, and Wyoming's lone member of Congress, issued a blistering statement supporting the impeachment of Donald Trump.

There has never been a greater betrayal by a President’ said Cheney.

In response, the pro-Trump forces tried to do her in. They wanted Cheney removed from her leadership positions and even took a vote on it.

The Trump cultists in the House took a vote on it.

Yesterday I noted Liz Cheney Marks a Welcome New Chapter in the Trump Era

The Trump cultists went down in flames 145-61.

Straw Man Attack on Cheney

One of my terribly misguided readers responded: "Are we seriously looking at the Cheney family as paragons of political virtue? I'll take Trump over the Cheney's blood soaked hands thank you."

Sigh.

For starters, Liz Cheney is not the same person as her father, nor was she ever vice president.

Second, no one, especially me, promoted the "Cheney family as paragons of political virtue".

Third, this is about individual issues, now, not about the past.

Fourth, without a doubt Trump tried to hijack an election and Sasse called him out.

Trump did things so inexcusable that many Republicans condemned them.

Political Parties Should Not Be Cults or Religions

Politics and political parties are not (rather they should not be) religions. But that is what Trump and his cultists have tried to make them.

Fortunately, and regardless of what you may think of Sasse and Cheney as individuals, they did the right thing in this instance, and in a big way.

I do not give a damn about parties. I do care about individual issues. Cheney and Sasse deserve a huge round of cheers, on this issue, and get them from this corner.

My misguided reader, and any like him, need to play Sasse's message over and over and over again until it sets in.

Trump put himself above the Constitution and demanded everyone else do the same. He even tried to coerce Pence and Georgia officials into hijacking the election.

Regardless of what you may think of Trump's policies, the above facts make Trump unfit to be president.

Unfortunately, most of Trump's sheep are too brainwashed by the cult to ever understand either Sasse's or Cheney's message.

Good for Sasse.....and Cheney.....it is a good sign that at least a few of the smart people in the room have not completely subverted by Trump....and that some people do actually have PRINCIPLES that guide their actions.....

The Trump cult has no principles other than loyalty to The Donald no matter what.

That’s a sad way to run a country like the US.....This isn’t Belarus...at least not yet.

Equating all those do not like the corporate Democrats and the corporate Republicans as belonging to Trump is a misunderstanding of the origin of the anger. Trump is over. Just about everyone knows that. Believing that he was the problem and that with him gone everything will go back to normal is erroneous. The iniquities have been building for a long time and it will take a long time to correct them but it will happen no matter what. It may come from the Republican or from the Democrats but not under the leaders now. Biden is a pushback from the oligarchs in a desperate attempt to buy time. Hopefully they would use this time to make real reforms but I rather doubt that. Those who got us into this mess will not get us out.

I have been asking this question to “republicans” I know, “What is next for the republican party?” I usually get blank stares.

No one has been able to articulate what exactly the RNC stands for at this point.

Any takers here?

I don't even like Sasse but he's correct about this. This country would be a far more pleasant place to live if people actually stuck to their principles, whatever they may be, rather than joining a mob. We have way too many idiots on the left and right who disengaged their brains with the single-minded goal of "owning" the other side at any cost.

Despite being wounded, the Qult is alive and well over on ZH. There are still plenty of people channeling Bluto's "was it over when the Germany bombed Pearl Harbor?" in the comments. I can't believe how many actual families were torn apart by Q, the world's weirdest political fan fiction that casts Trump as the savior of humanity.

Out in Nebraska it probably does take real cojones for Sasse to make this stand, I'm sure he's feeling the heat all around.

Sasse is right, and he was sincere but the video was a political calculation. He' testing the waters to see if there is an anti-Trump lane and if he can lead it. And while I welcome what Sasse said, it was a political calculation and he's only now showing the courage that he lacked during the first impeachment trial. If we're talking anti-Trump lane Romney has been far more consistent sticking his neck out.

The truth is that there is little to please the populace in the Republicans historic concerns.

Hence years of abortion, the increasng muddying of public life with religion, the demonization of the "other", ending up after a couple of decades at a point where an entirely fictitious narrative is being the next step.

Watched this video when it came out , It's gone viral and is being talked about. It seems to be having an impact in ways the words of Cheney and Romney have not

What Trump recognized was that there are millions of Americans who do not oppose or even care about abortion or same-sex marriage, much less stem-cell research or any of the other causes that had animated traditional social conservatives.

I have a lot of respect for Sasse, and have had for a long time. I met him when he gave the commencement speech for the high school graduation of one of my sons. He is a good man, and while you may not always agree with him, you know that he will always do what he believes is right, and that's exactly how it should work in a representative republic. Read the book "Profiles in Courage" for examples of other people who have done what they believed was right, rather than what was popular.

I can tell you one thing. If the Republican Party of Nebraska does vote to censure him, I will not vote for any other Republican other than Sasse for any office, for a very long time. That's not easy to do, though because for most offices in Nebraska, elections are non-partisan, and candidates do not reveal their party affiliation. The Republican Party is hell-bent on it's own destruction. "Shrink the Party! We must drive out anyone not in the Trump cult!" seems to be the motto.

Sasse will no doubt get primaried in six years. We'll see what the world looks like then.

Realist
Realist

The Republican party still has some principled politicians. But it has been hijacked by the right wing media (Fox News, OAN, et al). People don't listen to most boring and principled politicians. They listen to the talking heads on TV and the internet, who feed them opinion pieces and lies. Trump was just another talking head who realized he could take advantage of the groundwork that had already been done for him and appeal to a whole host of disaffected people. From the beginning of his campaign he immediately reached out to every right wing, hate filled, racist, nut job in America to welcome them into the Republican tent. And they all came: Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Camp Auschwitz, Boogaloo Bois, Last Sons of Liberty, Qanon, 3%ers, NSC-131, 6MWE, KKK, Nazis, Thin Blue Line, Confederates, etc. He disparaged every race, and ethnic group along the way, endearing him to his new supporters.

Now the Republican party is infected with these nut jobs, who threaten traditional Republican politicians who actually care about their conservative principles, the Constitution, and the truth. It is truly sad that so few Republicans have the guts to stand up to them, like Ben Sasse.

Far too many Republicans either fear for their lives or fear for their political position, and say nothing. Their silence is deafening.

Even worse, some Republicans want to take advantage, and position themselves to become the next Trump, and inherit his most caustic supporters. They see political opportunity as more important to them personally, than the Constitution or the truth. You know who they are.

The problem now, is that the Republican party is at war with itself. Which group will eventually gain control? The traditional conservative types, or the nut job cultists?

Now that we're talking about QAnon and mis-information, and "weird worship of one dude", how about we talk about the elephant in the room, specifically worlds largest religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. I don't know much about the Indian religions, so let's at least start with Christianity and Islam (both Abrahamic religions). It's fairly clear that Christianity and Islam were human creations designed to control other people, and suppress women by pushing narratives that women were inferior to men for thousands of years. Jesus & other characters in there are just symbols of the oppressive religions for people to hang on to.
It's truly sad and pathetic that in this modern scientific world we still have billions of people hooked on on the lies of worlds largest religions. One can be a good person and follow good rules without being brainwashed.

Ben Sasse is one of the few Republicans I have hope in, especially as I realize Rand Paul has proven himself to be less and less of an independent thinker in recent years often repeating the talking point lies. My contributions will leave Senator Paul's pocket and find themselves in Sasse's war chest.

Shame on the Nebraska GOP for the exact reasons Sasse points out.

Mish I believe the elections was stolen. Ben Sasse has this one wrong. No matter. Perhaps he can help in some ways to extricate American from the coming economic disaster. I hear 100 times more about Covid-19 than I do our crushing debt. I wonder if the two are connected.
I'll never believe that Demented Joe Biden was fairly elected to the Presidency. To believe that would completely destroy my faith in the American people. I'm 69. Healthy and fit. I'm educated. I've lived in half a dozen states and have met a lot of people, especially as a self-employed businessman. My faith in America has been crippled. The media's treatment of Trump (and anyone who voted for him) is, was, and will be despicable. I will urge my children (5) to never join the military and to understand that our system of government has been mortally tainted. My government has, by the viciousness of the Left who now controls the national agenda, become my enemy. And that is how I will know my 'country' from now on. I do believe that if a man no longer feels loyalty for his nation that it is in line for him to not wish to be a part of it. That is true with me. And when travel opens up, I'll be gone and America will have one less critic.
