McConnell Accuses Trump of  Feeding a Mob Lies

Mish

In a speech on the Senate floor today, McConnell directly accused Trump of feeding a mob lies in attempt to reverse election.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell

This mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.

Powerful Signal

McConnell's statement is a powerful signal that he will vote to convict Trump and that he has at least 17 other Republican senators who are willing to do the same.

Which Senators Are Likely to Convict Trump?

On January 14, I asked Which Senators Are Likely to Convict Trump?

I came up with 15 Republicans who would consider conviction. That's 2 short assuming all 50 Democrats vote to convict.

I explain my rationale in the above link. Since then, I added James Lankford (OK), Mike Rounds (SD), and Richard Shelby (AL).

My List Then

My list, in alphabetic order, includes Richard Burr (NC), Sue Collins (ME), Mike Crapo (ID), Shelly Moore Capito (WV), Chuck Grassley (IA), Mike Lee (UT), Mitch McConnell (KY), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Rob Portman (OH), Mitt Romney (UT), Ben Sasse (NE), Dan Sullivan (AK), John Thune (SD), Thom Tillis (NC), and Pat Toomey (PA).

The names in bold (6) are highly likely to convict. The rest may need some arm twisting from McConnell and today he signaled he will do just that.

I explain my rationale in the above link. Since then, I added James Lankford (OK), Mike Rounds (SD), and Richard Shelby (AL) making 18.

Born to Run the Numbers

Born to Run the Numbers (BTR) has a different list of The Seventeen GOP Senators Who Could Convict Trump.

It came up with its list on January 17, I posted mine on the 14th. Here are the possible names it comes up with that I did not have or add: John Cornyn (TX), Jim Inhofe (OK), Deb Fisher (NE).

They also had Tom Cotton but he is a non-starter. Cotton will not vote to convict and has stated so. Cotton explains there is no legitimate process after the 20th but most constitutional lawyers disagree.

Deb Fisher

BTR says "Fischer is the quieter of the Nebraska Senators relative to Ben Sasse, but she issued a strong statement in support of the Biden certification, has been silent on the impeachment and thus appears to be open to the Senate process."

I like that thought process and agree she is very likely.

My List Now

I am willing to add the other three Born to Run names to my list making it 21.

My list, in alphabetic order, includes Richard Burr (NC), Sue Collins (ME), John Cornyn (TX), Mike Crapo (ID), Shelly Moore Capito (WV), Deb Fisher (NE), Chuck Grassley (IA), Jim Inhofe (OK), James Lankford (OK), Mike Lee (UT), Mitch McConnell (KY), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Rob Portman (OH), Mitt Romney (UT), Mike Rounds (SD), Ben Sasse (NE), Richard Shelby (AL), Dan Sullivan (AK), John Thune (SD), Thom Tillis (NC), and Pat Toomey (PA).

The rest of the Republican senators range from unlikely to never so McConnell needs 17 of those 21 or some other wildcard that I missed.

I suggest McConnell has 17 or expects to have 17 or he would not have made that announcement today,

Trump Will Go Quietly

Why Wasn't the Georgia Phone Call in the Charges?

It's not that failure to convict would constitute double jeopardy. Rather, failure to convict could make conviction separately more difficult. Alternately, it could get Georgia to not pursue the case.

Barr pretty much delivered the same message. For thoe saying yea but McConnell ws in bed with Trump and got all his judges it is true McConnell plays politics, he games the system to get his goals accomplished but Mitch is still in an instituionalist. He believes in the Senate. Trump tried to break the concept of co-equal branches of government. He tried to stop Senate busines and attempted a coup via insurrection as sloppy as an attempt it was. This was a bridge too far and its clear McConnell has broken with Trump as did Mike Pence.

By the way when Trump departs Washington Pence, McConnell and McCarthy won't be there. They've turned dow the invititation along with others

The Republican party establishment are beginning to realize that they have to cut Trump off at the knees to not only keep him from running for president again but to also try to kill the whole Trump movement. If a conviction goes through, look for Trump to wind up in jail as the final parting or coup de grâce, if you will.

The real question, what is the GOP now? From what I gather there are fractured groups of GoP: Trump republicans, RINOs, Oath Keepers, Boogaloos, Proud Boys, Evangelicals, Confederates, Qnon and the whole alt right and neonazis.

I am not sure you can form one party from these messy groups.

McConnell is signaling his desire to convict Trump, for sure. If he gets onboard, it’ll probably happen.

The thing is, and I’d like to remind everyone, is that McConnell was perfectly willing to shill for Trump a month ago. He was and he did.

But the political tide is going out on Trump, and now it makes sense to cut him loose and look to the future. And.....it gives McConnell an opportunity to repay Trump in spades for screwing the GOP in Georgia.

I’m fine with impeachment if they get a conviction. But if they don’t, it won’t be good for the country, in my view.

The broadside was delivered on Mr Trump’s final day in the White House and on the eve of Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th US president. It's no accident that this message was delivered on Trump's last full day in office and will be a defining remark of Trump's legacy. It looks more than 50/50 that McConell votes to remove.

Is it possible - REAL consequences for over-the-top illegal behavior??
The sooner the GOP can move on from Trump the better for EVERYONE.

Is America great again?

Sounds like there is going to be an effort to purge Trump out of the GOP in hopes of preventing any chance of 2024. I pray they are successful.

It seems to me that if Trump is convicted by the Senate that they will also vote to deny him the right to ever run again.

Since it looks like Republicans in the Senate have chosen not to let Trump take them down, it would be good for others to follow in their footsteps with the understanding everything Trump touches dies. Apparently the crack cocaine killed too many brain cells with the My Pillow guy. How long before his inferior product (yes I bought one a few years ago) is forgotten about and his wealth is gone as he continues this damn foolish crusade choosing Trump over his family and the security he has created in his business?

Parler up and limping along with a help from a special friend...

Parler’s resurrection comes after Amazon dropped it from its web hosting platform, and is being assisted by a Russian firm called DDoS-Guard.

First reported by Reuters, a DDoS-Guard spokesperson told TPM in a statement that the company had begun “servicing” Parler on the night of Jan. 17.

“The security provider is not at liberty to disclose the services provided to the customers as it contradicts our privacy policy,” the statement reads. “However, due to the increased media attention, we have to state that the customer does not use the hosting service.”

Parler has marketed itself as a right-wing option for those disaffected by moderators on Twitter and Facebook, aimed at creating a thicker information bubble in which the conservative movement can live.

The site has reportedly been funded by right-wing financier Rebekah Mercer, who also was a prominent bankroller of President Trump’s 2016 run.

Mainstream conservative personalities like Sen. Cruz have boosted the platform, while extremist groups like the Proud Boys took to using the site after being banned from Facebook.

DDoS-Guard, the Russian firm that’s played a role in resurrecting Parler, has long been on the radar of cybersecurity researchers. It first popped up in relation to Parler after one researcher noticed that the right-wing social network website’s new internet protocol address was owned by the firm.

The day before the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, researcher Brian Krebs published a blog post outlining research finding that the company provided services to prominent QAnon sites, 8chan, and Hamas....

I hope Trump voters stay home in 2022 and give McConnell and McCarthy losses of historic proportions.

Thankfully Congress has never fed us lies. Who do they think they are kidding. In the annual respectability polls, congressmen score lower than trial lawyers and used car salesmen.

Obviously Republicans have no choice but to impeach Trump because if he runs again as the Republican candidate he will lose and if he runs again as an independent he will split the conservative vote and both he and the Republican will lose (a la Ross Perot and Papa Bush).

Not sure of the significance but McConnell used the word "provoke" and not "incite" in his condemnation. He may have intentionally avoided using the language contained in the articles of impeachment. Mitch McConnell is nothing if not a political animal. I still think Mitch is far more likely to vote to impeach than not but the choice in language was probably not one of chance.

Pelosi's impeachment of Trump might be the single greatest political move that I have seen in my lifetime. Holding a single article of impeachment in her hand she checkmates Trump, he has no further moves. Brilliant! Just take a minute and really think about it...

I would say the just the opposite McConnell is saying that because he knows there will be no vote and he can look good to the media that so loathes Trump and know$ he will get some press. He is a pure politician doing nothing that does not benefit him$elf. His type is exactly what makes 1/6/21 possible. We will know the end of this story soon.....

How quickly McConnell, the other treacherous Anti-Trump Republicans and Anti-Democratic "Democrats" (Twitter, FB et al) forget: nearly half of the American people -by ALL accounts - cast their votes for President Trump the last two elections . Nealy half of the American people believed then as they continue to do so now - President Trump was only one of a handful of US Presidents at most in our nation's history to genuinely put the interests of the American people before his own personal agenda. Rest assured that the McConnels, Pelosi's and Jack Dorsy's of our nation will soon fade away...the legacy of President Trump lives on. G-d Bless America,

I doubt there will be a senate vote. Once Biden is sworn in, I don't think it can legally happen. And I doubt any republican wants to go on record.
