Tweets of the Day: State of Emergency in Alameda County

Mish

The coronavirus is spreading exponentially outside China. Alameda County CA declared a state of emergency.

It's a good thing this is all nothing but a hoax, otherwise I might believe some of these stories.

Clearly this Mark Spiegel character hates America and is spreading the hoax. Note: that was sarcasm.

All fake news to induce us to corrupt or precious bodily fluids with vaccines that will give us autism and make our pets gay.

"Clearly this Mark Spiegel character hates America and is spreading the hoax. Note: that was sarcasm."

What isn't sarcasm is that the democrats are out to get Trump. They will go out of their way to politicize Covid-19, just as they politicized the impeachment hearings.

I was out of town for 9 days. Now back home.

We rented a house in St. George UT. Still under construction.

Goodbye Illinois within a few months.

"You surely must realize he was referring to the democrats trying to blame Trump for the US not being prepared for the virus"

Show me some examples of Democrats politicizing the Coronavirus.

Then find some examples where Trump did that.

I am open to examples from both sides.

The first Australian coronavirus death has just occurred. Also, in my hometown, a woman who just returned from Iran went back to work as a facial massage therapist, treating 40 patients before falling ill with the virus.

OK, obviously I was too subtle. I will spell it out slowly. In the first sentence you call for giving Partisan politics a rest. Great idea. And the second statement you attack the Democratic Party which suggests to me that what you really meant was that the Democrats should not criticize Trump but it's okay if the Republicans criticize the Democrats. Republicans criticizing the Democrats Is also a partisan political statement. That is not giving partisan politics arrest. Also, you have no knowledge about my feelings about Donald Trump. Please don't accuse me of trump derangement syndrome without proof. I'm merely pointing out how inconsistent you're thinking is. one can appreciate the subtleties of the English language without being an enemy of President Trump and his policies.

My impressions from watching this beast kill for a couple months now:

  1. It has no political party affiliation or preference.

2.If you are older than 60, you need to pay close attention, and stay on your toes, especially if you already have a medical condition.

3.If you're over 80, ignore early symptoms and let it get you down before seeking help, your odds of dying are roughly one in seven.

Early and drastic control efforts made an enormous difference in the 2014 Ebola outbreak, reducing eventual total case and deaths by over 90%, compared to model predictions two months into the outbreak, which is roughly where we are.

This is our seventh major virus crisis in 102 years: 1918, 1957, 1968, 2002, 2009 and 2014, 2019 and we don't appear to be getting a lot smarter at organizing ourselves to deal with them.

I'm beginning to wonder if the answer to the Fermi Paradox is viruses...and politics.

@awc13 Do some simple math. Consider COVID-19 as contagious as the flu. The flu killed 45000 of the 45 million that contracted it. The death rate is 0.1% or one per thousand. COVID 19 appears to have a death rate of about 3.4% or 34TIMES that of the flu. 45million time 0.034 = 1.53Million dead. How is that not a problem??????

@awc13 Further, there is some immunity to the flu in the general population, as many people have already suffered with strains similar to the ones extant today. This reduces the size of the population that might contract the flu or become seriously ill in any particular flu season. No such immunity exists against COVID-19. A much larger segment of the population will be affected. There could easily be 5 to 10 million dead in the US before this is over.

I have no confidence that the government can do much of anything. It is too large to contain. TPTB will do what they can, but will be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. Things will get much worse before they get better. I doubt that there will be the will here to enforce quarantines to the level that the Chinese have done, at least not before they become ineffective. Even so, the Chinese have not stopped it, only slowed it.
