Trump Downplays Outbreak as Sniffles and Burning Embers

Mish

Covid new cases have set 9 records in the past month but president trump downplayed the outbreak.

On Fox News, Trump Calls Some Flare-Ups ‘Burning Embers’ despite record cases and hospital beds filling up in California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida,

In an interview on Fox News that aired Sunday, Mr. Trump said many recent cases involve young people. “They have the sniffles and we put it down as a test,” he said.

Mr. Trump said some flare-ups of new cases were like “burning embers” and flames that need to be put out. “We have embers and we do have flames. Florida became more flame-like,” he said, adding, “It’s going to be under control.’’

While more testing does result in more cases, Dr. Fauci said in a June 16 interview that higher percentages of positive tests in many states “cannot be explained by increased testing.”

The percent of positive tests on a seven day average has swelled from about 4.4% in mid June to almost 9% as of mid July, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Daily New Deaths and Cases

Daily Covid Deaths a nd New Cases Per Day 2020-07-19

Deaths vs Cases

  • Daily deaths peaked on April 24 at 2,254 per day.
  • The number of cases peaked 11 days earlier at 32,464 cases per day.
  • Deaths are trending up again, and also with a lag.

The lags make sense. People do not immediately die. Rather they get sick, then very sick, then go to the hospital, then die.

The July lag is unlikely to match the lag in April because different states and age groups are involved.

Reduced Death Rate Factors

  • Hospitals have worked out better treatment methods.
  • Increasingly younger people are catching Covid.

Patients Stranded in Emergency Rooms as Hospitals Fill Up

The problem with downplaying the reduced death rate is hospital beds are filling up even if people do not end up dying.

Note that Patients Stranded in Emergency Rooms as Hospitals Fill Up

To contain the outbreaks, even Republican governors have walked back reopenings.

32 Million People Collecting Unemployment Benefits

As noted last Thursday, All Continued Unemployment Claims Top 32 Million Again.

Most of those people are on economic life support as Congress weighs extending benefits this week.

Find Something New

Trump's daughter, Ivanka, says "Find Something New".

To suggest that 32 million people can find something new is ridiculopus.

The only other leader of a country that might sound as ridiculous about this virus as Trump, would be Bolsonaro of Brazil, a country which is second only to the US in total cases and deaths.

Trump continues to talk as if this virus is just a little flu, with a few people having the sniffles. He seems to care nothing for the 140k who have already died, and the hundreds of thousands who will suffer long term health problems. And while he pretends there is nothing to worry about, the virus continues to spread out-of-control in the US.

There are currently almost 2 million active cases in the US and you are adding over 60 thousand more each day.

By comparison, here are the number of active cases in

Japan 3781

Germany 5880

Canada 4452

And those numbers are dropping every day.

The US number is 1,943,461 and going up every day.

I know that Trump is desperate to get the economy going again. But that simply won’t be possible until he gets the virus under control. And based on his words and actions, that isn’t going to happen.

Coronavirus: Why everyone was wrong
The immune response to the virus is stronger than everyone thought
Back to Reason

The original article was published in the Swiss magazine Weltwoche (World Week) on June 10th. The author, Beda M Stadler is the former director of the Institute for Immunology at the University of Bern, a biologist and professor emeritus. Stadler is an important medical professional in Switzerland, he also likes to use provoking language, which should not deter you from the extremely important points he makes.

This article is about Switzerland and it does not suggest that the situation is exactly the same globally. I am advocating for local measures according to local situations. And I advocate for looking at real data rather than abstract models. I also suggest to read to the end, because Stadler makes crucial points about testing for Sars-CoV-2.

Well of course the orange clown is laughing at it. He has the best security detail and drugs that fiat can buy.

This will be Trump's strategy until November, that Covid-19 is just the flu and that masks are evil. He's in a rough situation, so from a purely political standpoint it makes sense to be obstinate and swing for the fences since he has nothing to lose.

Ironically, this will hamper Trump's efforts to demonize China and the CCP. If the virus only gives you a case of the sniffles, then who cares if it came from China?

Chris Wallace did a good job. I'm surprised Trump agreed to be interviewed by a skilled journalist. What will Trump say when hospitals in 15-20 States get blown out and they have to call in refrigerated trucks for the dead and the military to set up field hospitals? This result is already locked in. I understand Trump is inept, but what about Birx? Does she despise Trump so she's feeding him bad information? She's not stupid enough to think we would succeed like Italy has. Trump will vilify her and say she told him to open up and to send kids to school. We all know he won't take responsibility for anything.

Watched excerpts of the Chris Wallace interview. Trump is delusional. The GOP will go down in flames if they keep backing Trump for November.

Also deaths are reduced because we are keeping Covid from burning thru convalecent homes for the aged this time around unlike what occured in New York last spring and to a decent extent elsewhere.

The part where Trump waved away a thousand deaths a day with "it is what it is" was truly chilling. That's 365K deaths a year at the current rate, and with the death count now ticking up along with infection rate and ICU beds disappearing, you could have half a million Americans or more dying needlessly from this every single year. That's a higher death rate annually than ANY war the US has ever fought in.

Total failure of leadership, total lack of empathy for the well-being of one's fellow citizens, and malice/joy at the plight of the northeast that is now converting to science denial as the northeast got the virus under control while the Red States allow their populations to get permanently injured and/or killed.

Worst. President. Ever. By far.

Young people should continue to flout the rules. After all, the virus won't affect them much. If they spread the virus around it will take out a lot of the older folks who destroyed their future. If enough old folks go it might even stimulate the economy. Win-win!
