I read, but now can't find, a study that said the American west has had 5 megadroughts in the last 50,000 years. The only thing really different about this one is that the others happened during the last ice age. These droughts are periodic, and last up to 1,000 years each. They were happening long before human contributions to the atmosphere had any affects. And they happened before 55 million people decided to populate the region. I am not going to get excited about it, at least till there is evidence that something is different this time.
