Biden Declares 'Democracy's Day' in Plea for Unity

Joe Biden became the 46th president of the United States at Noon today. He called for unity in his inaugural address.

Biden Calls for Unity in Inaugural Address

Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the U.S. shortly before noon ET. Minutes earlier, Kamala Harris was sworn in as vice president,  the first woman to hold that role.

'Democracy's Day'

Biden kicked his Inaugural Address declaring "This is America's day.   This is democracy's day,"

"Democracy has Prevailed"

"Democracy has prevailed," said Biden pointing to and thanking former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama who were in attendance.

The phrase was in reference to the riots at that capitol and Trump's efforts to overturn the election.

Trump was notably absent at the inauguration.

"Let us start afresh. All of us. Show respect to one another. Politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path. Every disagreement doesn't have to be a cause for total war. And, we must reject a culture in which facts themselves are manipulated and even manufactured."

Biden cited Abraham Lincoln who said "My whole soul is in it," after signing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Biden said, "Today on this January day, my whole soul is in this, bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation, and I ask every American to join me in this cause."

Trump Vows: ‘We Will Be Back’

On his way out the door, Trump Vows: ‘We Will Be Back’

I will be watching. I will be listening,” he said. “We will be back in some form.”

He walked off stage to the Village People's “YMCA” then walked up the stairs to Air Force Once, which lifted off at 8:59 a.m., bound for Florida.

I doubt Trump will be back even if it is at a gathering of ex presidents. I can't imagine the last three presidents would give him the attention he wants as it is becoming more and more clear the GOP will probably cut ties with Trump.

He will never be back as President.

He disgraced himself permanently in the manner he departed.

I voted for him only because I preferred his policies to Biden, but by no means did I support Trump with much else than a vote.

How many people were there waiting for the former president as he landed in Florida?
Hundreds, thousands? Surely the LARGEST crowd EVER assembled to greet a former president?!

What a joke, we aren't even a democracy. Biden reminds me of aging Soviet leaders in the 1980s, hopefully his America doesn't mimic his decline.

Democrats always cry for unity, but only if you follow their cause. 'Let's all work together and I tell you what to do.' When the repubs shove something down your throat, they just do it, whereas the Dems like to pretend that we are all one big happy family and then shove it down your throat. Let's see if Biden actually does do some type of across the aisle working with the repubs, but I wouldn't count on it. I never voted for Trump but I do hate the hypocrisy on both sides.

Trump won't be back but as a reaction to the next 4-8 years a more acceptable version might.

How many didn't vote for Trump because they just didn't like him and not so very much against his policies? A more likeable version might carry the day.

The only way the USA unites now will be in war or after hitting rock bottom. Either or both could happen in the next 4-8 years. Same is true for many other countries too.

We are in a depression and it will grind slowly and finely.

Stopped by ZH a few times today to gauge the reaction. It's quieter over there than I expected, presumably a lot of people are licking their wounds. The ones who were posting were sharply divided into two camps, either still trusting the plan or angry at Trump for deceiving them.

As for unity, we won't be seeing much of that in the next few years. Even within the red/blue teams there are increasingly bitter disagreements and harsh economic reality isn't going to help matters.

By the way, what happened to all those patriots that were gonna storm the inauguration with their AR-15s? Did they chicken out because of the armed soldiers there because yeah, they were going to shoot back.

Or was it that the House insurrectionists didnt get their pardon and got thrown under the bus by Trump and now they are all being hunted down with felony charges and wont be able to hold a job anywhere from now on much less own guns legally?

It will take more than calls for unity for Biden to succeed. At this juncture, in the history of our republic, it is hard to see that democrats, republicans or Trump supporters will agree on the substance of anything significant, especially the lessons of history. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the Congress, our politicians, leaders, and especially just inaugurated President JB, can set the tone and example for policies that in fact will act to unite the nation. We will all be watching and hoping.

I wish Biden luck. I damn sure don’t want the job.....I don’t think he’s in it for the money, although he never impressed me as anything but another hack politician.

He couldn’t possibly be as bad as Trump...no matter how much he caters to the Woke crowd.

Democracy's day? how about Oligarchy's day or Plutocracy's day?
America's political system is still broken, and it cannot be repaired with a few beautiful words like Unity and Democracy. I don't see when it will be repaired if ever.

Can I ask a question. Who and What policies would members here like to continue. Since I am based in the UK I can only comment on the US foreign policy ones. I would like to continue the containment of Chinese Communist Party. However I am not sure how we do it. I want a equivalent of Truman's containment of the Soviets. I also want US to stop Trump's transactional approach to US allies.

Can anyone guess where many of the former Obama administration folks (now Biden administration folks) have been hanging out and collecting a nice paycheck? Why, at the Biden Center down in Delaware or Pennsylvania, that's where. And with $20 million in undisclosed Chinese donations to live off of. At least half a dozen of these critters were there drawing $160,000 to $220,000 per year for being "Managing Directors" of the non-profit.

But, compared to the Clinton Foundation, Old Joe is still and amateur.

Biden's speech was universally praised. Four year ago after hearing Trump's speech George W Bush said that was some scary shit. It was very dystopian. Biden went back to a traditional message and in light of January 6th it might be the best Presidential inauguration speech in some time. Trump left as he came not being able to rise to the occasion and be part of something bigger than himself. He was simply unable to be gracious and consider the institution of the Presidency and be part of the transition . So Trump skulked away to Mar-a-lago

My goal to focus on unity. I am happy to debate issues and I know we have lots of disagreements. My hope is in debate we find the threads of agreement and work on those tiny threads. It is a start. I am an American and will celebrate that with all of you.

Articles of impeachment just filed against Biden. 2022 midterms will be interesting.
