Why is Pompeo\Trump suddenly all over Hong Kong issues?

LarryF

They didn't seem to care before now what happened to Hong Kong. I suppose this is a way to keep the focus on China and "ignore that man behind the curtain" (so to speak).

United States has always quietly supported Hong Kong residents. One of the weird aspects of the Trump presidency is when conventional American positions come through. It is irritating China along with increased support for Taiwan.

Trump's position on Hong Kong is not consistent. He typically argues that we should not be mixing into the internal politics of other countries. He doesn't wade into human rights abuses in Saudi Aruabia(remember MBS, Russia or Turkey but its easy for him on China and Iran since he's taken an adverse position to their government)

Interfering in other country's sovereignty is an American past time. The US government has always believed in the freedom ..... of its companies and state organs to do whatever the f they want.

Why the interest in HK now? It's election year. He has to be seen doing something against China to appease the right wing.

Trump does not give an f about anyone but himself and perhaps Ivanka (and not in a fatherly way).

The US governments use HongKong/Taiwan as a leverage in their effort to contain China. CIA and US government organs have been known to be funding the riots and anti-China movements over the last few years. All those slogans of supports for human rights, democracy, freedom etc. are pure BS.
