Valero Energy Corporation Stock Buy Recommendation Reiterated (VLO) - TheStreet

NEW YORK (

TheStreet

)

-- Valero Energy Corporation

(NYSE:

VLO

) has been reiterated by TheStreet Ratings as a buy with a ratings score of B. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its robust revenue growth, reasonable valuation levels, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and notable return on equity. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had sub par growth in net income.

    Highlights from the ratings report include:

      • The revenue growth came in higher than the industry average of 11.9%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues rose by 33.9%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share.
      • VALERO ENERGY CORP has exprienced a steep decline in earnings per share in the most recent quarter in comparison to its performance from the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. But, we feel it is poised for EPS growth in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, VALERO ENERGY CORP increased its bottom line by earning $3.67 versus $1.63 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($3.83 versus $3.67).
      • Despite currently having a low debt-to-equity ratio of 0.48, it is higher than that of the industry average, inferring that management of debt levels may need to be evaluated further. Regardless of the somewhat mixed results with the debt-to-equity ratio, the company's quick ratio of 0.70 is weak.
      • The return on equity has improved slightly when compared to the same quarter one year prior. This can be construed as a modest strength in the organization. In comparison to the other companies in the Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels industry and the overall market, VALERO ENERGY CORP's return on equity is significantly below that of the industry average and is below that of the S&P 500.

      Valero Energy Corporation operates as an independent petroleum refining and marketing company. The company operates through three segments: Refining, Ethanol, and Retail. The company has a P/E ratio of 8.4, equal to the average energy industry P/E ratioand below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Valero Energy has a market cap of $12.73 billion and is part of the

      basic materials

      sector and

      energy

      industry. Shares are up 11.8% year to date as of the close of trading on Wednesday.
