The pessimism during the regular market day carried into the extended session as no stock among the Instinet top 20 volume movers produced a gain in the first 40 minutes of trading. The good news was that the stocks didn't move significantly lower as most remained unchanged or were only slightly below their closing prices.

Volume on Instinet remained heavy as 4.4 million shares changed hands in the first 25 minutes of the late session. Technology shares, which mostly sold off in regular trading, were active but little changed. Eight of the Instinet top 20 volume movers remained unchanged half an hour after the closing bell chimed. Trading significantly dropped off after that, as 5.3 million shares traded by the 45-minute mark.
