NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Liberal bias in higher education has been a longstanding accusation by people on the right going back to William F. Buckley's 1951 book, God and Man at Yale

University of British Columbia sociologist Neil Gross' book, Why Are Professors Liberal and Why Do Conservatives Care, provides a lot of data suggesting that the liberal bias in higher education is in fact real.

According to the book, American professors are three times more likely to be liberal than the average American with an estimated 50% of college professors identifying as liberal, though just 8-9% of professors in the country can be described as "far left" or "radical". Meanwhile, economic conservatives represent about 4% of academia and 23% of professors are pro-military and social conservatives.

Democrats outnumber Republicans 4 to 1 in the college professor ranks, according to Gross, and 6 to 1 at the country's elite universities.

There are numerous theories as to why there is such a lack of parity when it comes to the political leanings of college professors in this country, but there are options in the country for conservative students who would like to study under like-minded individuals.

This is a list of the 10 most conservative universities in the country as ranked by, based on 73,601 opinion-based survey responses about politics, from 49,093 current students and recent alumni. The rankings are based on students self-identifying their political leanings and judging their perception of their campuses' political atmosphere.
