TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. (AMTD)  has partnered with Tencent Holdings Ltd.  (TCEHY) to create a richer, more informative experience for retail investors.

The partnership, announced on Monday, aims to enable investors using TD trading platforms to better access their research, get U.S. market updates, see educational videos on investing, and check account balances, through the WeChat social media platform.

WeChat is now home to more than 1 billion monthly active users, and TD wants to reach its clients on the platforms they spend time on.

"We want to meet clients where they are and engage with them on their terms," said Sunayna Tuteja, head of strategic partnerships and emerging technologies at TD Ameritrade. She added, "Our goal in applying technologies like AI and machine learning to the conversational platforms people use every day is to help make investing simpler and more accessible to more people."

TD is the first U.S. financial services company to partner with Tencent, which has used WeChat to enter into the fintech and payments business.

WeChat has become more than a social media platform, offering news and entertainment, often through videos.
