Chinese officials are stepping up efforts to censor the content being shared on social media sites, investigating top networks like Weibo Corp. (WB) - Get Report , Baidu Inc. (BIDU) - Get Report and Tencent Holding Group Inc.'s (TCEHY) WeChat, Reuters reported Friday. 

President Xi Jinping has made cyber sovereignty a key plank of his administration's agenda. 

"Users are spreading violence, terror, false rumors, pornography and other hazards to national security, public safety, social order," China's Cyberspace Administration said in a statement. 

Western social networks like Facebook Inc. (FB) - Get Report and Twitter Inc. (TWTR) - Get Report are already banned in China.
