Most stock markets around the world were closed Tuesday to observe the May Day holiday, and the few that were open were sending conflicting signals.
Among those with sessions in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 slipped 0.7% to 17,275, and the Jakarta Composite Index tacked on 0.1% at 2001. Australia's All Ordinaries Index edged down 0.3% to 6140.
Europe didn't have much action either, owing to the holiday. London's FTSE 100 was losing 0.5% to 6420, while the Irish Overall Index gained 0.2% at 9489.
On the continent, Denmark's Copenhagen 20 fell 0.8% to 481.
